In the mid-1800’s lace workers took smaller bulldogs with them to
France, especially the bat eared puppies. They were bred to be lap
dogs and companions of the Parisian street walkers. They became a
favourite of Royalty and by the turn of the century were one of the
most popular international breeds.
Adult Frenchies typically weigh between 16 to 28 pounds – females
range 16 to 24, males 20 to 28. They should not be allowed to become
overweight—they do like to eat. They have been known to become
flatulent - they are bulldogs - so healthy diet is important.
French Bulldogs were bred to be companions. They are fun loving
and entertaining clowns. They love to be with people and, due to
their compact size, don’t take up too much room. Frenchies should be
socialized to other people and dogs from a young age then they will
not overreact to unknown situations. They are typically good around
children.
Frenchies require little exercise but they can be very playful.
They like being outdoors with people, playing games or going for a
walk. They will play in shallow water but should NEVER be taken into
water over their head—they cannot swim! Vigourous exercise can cause
them to become too hot
Frenchies should not be kept in a pen for long periods — they are
people dogs. They do not require much grooming—they do shed a little
in the spring but their coats are easy to care for. They can have
allergies so be careful with artificial additives and preservatives.
A Frenchie’s main job is to be loved and adored. You wouldn’t want to ask
them to run a marathon with you. French Bulldogs are intelligent
little dogs but can be hard headed and stubborn — typical bulldogs. Consistency is important.
They love to play games so make the training fun. Puppies should
have frequent potty breaks - the adults like routine.
